Seems like there’s still a few good men around
July 26, 2009
First of all, I have been very touched by the amount of people regularly checking my blog despite my unprolific few weeks. Well, at least unprolific in blogging. I apologize for the wait but I promise some photos later of what I’ve been doing (hint: it includes some shopping of fabrics and serious sewing).
But now straight to the point; I’m starting a new thing here called ‘record of the week’. I know it’s a fresh and unique idea and all that, but what’s unusual about it is that it probably ain’t going to be all regular and weekly ^_^ Also the lps can be brand new or very old or anything in between. For example a year old like the first record of the week: MattiP – Save The King.
You know him from the Helsinki-based trio, Ceebrolistics. Quite a unique touch in his texts, delivered with his velvety voice; always made an impression on me. This lp wasn’t that fresh even when it came out, as most of the tracks had been published already on singles, eps and collections here and there, but it’s all pretty much sold out. And for people like me, who know the name but haven’t really gone out their way to be one of the few to get hands on the stuff, this is the perfect way to be introduced to his solo material … and to be bedazzled by it. His vocals (in one song it’s rapping, the next is more like reciting poetry) really gripped me and the dub/dubstep/electro/ambient/etc. sound is (quoting the movie Sideways) thight as a nun’s ass. I’m no pro in analysing electronic sound but the insane use of The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army bassline in the track ‘K I N G’ and the blunt beats in ‘Redefiniton of Silent Treatment’ sound fresh enough to me. Many parts of the lp tempt me to call MattiP the Finnish Saul Williams but maybe it’s just me.
Anyhoo, the tenner I spent on these 11 wonderful and versatile tracks was the best investment I’ve made in months. If you’re not convinced, check this as a taster. It’s the video for one of the prime moments of the lp, ‘A Few Good Men/Redefiniton of Silent Treatment’. That is one inspiring track.
One last thing today: if you’re in Helsinki, make sure you stop by one of Helsinki’s finest record stores, Stupido Shop. They’ve got some niiice stuff on sale. Well that’s all for today, behave yourselves.
Heat Beats
June 26, 2009
It’s a perfect heatwave in Helsinki and I’m stuck in my flat sewing a fancy dancy dress for my cousin. All I can do is close my eyes for a minute, picture myself lying in the park under a tree and listening to music. Here’s a playlist I used to get that moment in the shade of a basswood. Somehow summer has always been a very hip hop -esque time for me so here we go, some sweet beats for the days heat.
The Useless List #6: Run To The Sun
1. U-N-I – Beautiful Day (A fresh talent in the game, I’m gonna keep my eye on their upcoming material. Two eyes actually)
2. Ceebrolistics – Hyviä juttuja (An old Finnish summer classic. This track NEVER expires or fails to give me a smile)
3. Souls Of Mischief – From 93 Til Infinity (Talking about old classics : P Just couldn’t resist it.)
4. Matisyahu – King Without A Crown (I think this is some kind of a ‘guilty pleasure’ for me, as much as I hate the term. Lottie is to blame.)
5. The Grouch & Eligh – All In (Haven’t listened to them in yeeears, except now ran into their new album. Dope.)
Peace everyone, walk slowly, drink lots of water, forget about your figures and go buy that ice cream!
God hates a coward, sonny.

After quite a break, what would be a better way to kick things off than a brand new playlist? Picking the theme wasn’t really a challenge, having seen Faith No More live yesterday. Mike Patton is one of the very few people who should have their name in the dictionary in the definition of the term ‘musical creativity’ (I mean if such a term actually was in the dictionary). The man just keeps finding new ways to push genre boundaries and find new ways to use his voice. I don’t think there’s a sound he couldn’t produce.
None of this was new to me, but I’m still overwhelmed by his performance on the stage. I have never witnessed anyone jumping and running around for two hours while singing unbelievably challenging songs and hitting every note. He delivered every growl and shriek with 100% feeling and seconds afterwards pulled off the choruses better than on the lps.
In addition to Patton’s achievements as a singer, also his understanding on the structure of music is quite awe-inspiring. During his career of nearly 25 years, he has played a crucial role in countless bands/projects, such as Mr Bungle, Faith No More, Tomahawk, Fantômas, Lovage, Peeping Tom, etc. I have not listened to his music nearly enough but so far his presence on a track or record has always been a guarantee of freshness and quality.
Well I will bore you with my ramblings no more, now it’s time for the playlist. By the way, judging by some feedback I have got, I have not been clear enough about my playlists. So here comes: ALL MY PLAYLISTS ARE LINKS TO THE ONES I HAVE CREATED IN YOUTUBE. JUST CLICK ON THE NAME OF THE PLAYLIST, THERE’S NO NEED TO START LOOKING THE TRACKS UP IN SPOTIFY. That being said, behold:
The Useless List #5: Mike Patton is just a man? … Bollooocks!
1. Tin Hat Trio f. Mike Patton – Infinito (Mike goes opera. Works for me.)
2. Tomahawk – God Hates A Coward – Live (A true stonker! Love the gasmask)
3. Peeping Tom- Don’t Even Trip (He just doesn’t run out of genres..)
4. Faith No More – Just A Man (They actually conjured clouds to cover the sun for this during the gig. Epic.)
‘Memories are merely marks left by tears’
June 11, 2009
Today I have chosen a topic I have been saving up. Now I simply must write about it, having done some movie watcing the other day. I turn my unprofessional but analytic eye on the informal movie trilogy, that consists of the movies Days of Being Wild, In The Mood For Love and 2046, which are all, of course, by the Hong Kong based director Wong Kar Wai. The movies take us on a trip to China in the 1960’s, when clothes were so stylish it hurts and the men used enough Dapper Dan to keep the American economy blooming. I won’t go too far into the plot synopses, you all know how to use imdb.com, I’ll stick to the analysis of atmoshphere and concepts.
So, this informal movie trilogy kicks off with Days of Being Wild (1990). Four main characters with intertwining stories of love, obsession, disappointment, indifference and fear – all this clothed in very atmospheric use of camera and music, communicating dammed up emotions of crushing magnitude under a calm, minimalistic, surface. These themes and storytelling elements are present in all three movies, but in quite different ways. DoBW is not as polished as its followers, which let’s the viewer a little bit closer to the characters. Therefore, DoBW leaves quite much of it’s message for the viewer to interpret (I mean _even more_ than 2046). That’s logical though, because metaphoric and revealing story telling needs space, and being so close to the characters, it’s impossible to take that distance. Probably also part of the reason lies in the movies being meant as the first part of a two-movie-project. Well the sequel did come, only 11 years later (due to financial truobles). This sequel is, naturally, In The Mood For Love.
ITMFL is circling around questions like “what counts as adultery or affair?” and “how does an affair begin”. These questions are asked by the two main characters (portrayed by Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung) who realise that their spouses are sleeping together. As DoBW was about the clash of indifference and obsessive love, ITMFL is about the failure of a deep and considerate relationship and how one can unexpectedly find oneself experiencing guilty affection. “We are not like them”
ITMFL is an awe inspiring combination of amazing camera movement and using music as a means to storytelling. The screen either flows in slooow motion, displaying Su Li-zhen ascending the stairs or lingers on the cigarette smoke swirling near the ceiling, while the music (either Shigeru Umebayashi’s epic ‘Yumeji’s Theme’ or Nat King Cole’s legendary ‘Quizás, Quizás, Quizás’) paints emotions into the scene. The plot is kept simple and cohesive with un-needed characters in the minimum (even the spouses don’t get a face in the movie, only a voice and silhouette). And the ending always gives me the shivers.
And in 2004 this beautiful and heartbreaking story was given a finále that lifted the already perfect piece of art on a completely new level. 2046 is by far the most skillfully written of the three. Tony Leung made a lasting impression on me, again (as in ITMFL) as Chow. The story consists of Chow’s life as a man trying to run from his past and also of the allegoric story he writes, which reveals that actually he just keeps on delving even deeper into his miserable memories. Again the movie is an audiovisual masterpiece, but now the more complex writing with its metaphors and allegories gives an additional twist into the final result.
Finally, I strongly recommend watching these movies in chronological order. Days of Being Wild works well separately though, but at least if possible, don’t watch 2046 before In The Mood For Love.

I admit, I've thought of trying to copy his style. But can you really blame me?
A few words of the clothing and overall styles in the movies, … well they’re pretty much perfect. The budget on costume design has been quite something, looking at Tony Leung’s suits and especially Zhang Ziyi’s numerous evening dresses (of finest printed silk). Also the decoration, cars, houses and all visuals recreate the 60’s as it probably wasn’t, but definitely should’ve been.
Well I’m quite out of words. Reading back to what I’ve written it just really doesn’t make justice to the films. If you haven’t seen them yet, please do. It’s just something you surely won’t regret, if you’ve liked anything I’ve written about before (well the Black Bush don’t mean much but the other stuff…). Have a lovely weekend everyone, I know I will. Placebo, Nick Cave, Veto, Rubik, The Editors, Joensuu 1865 and many more should take care of that with their live shows.
Clothes in Perfect Canon
May 31, 2009
Edellämainittujen lisäksi visualistit saavat kiittää Canoneroa mm. elokuvista Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Chariots of Fire, The Cotton Club, Out of Africa, Dick Tracy, The Godfather III, Solaris, Ocean’s Twelve, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Marie Antoinette jne. Barry Lyndonista ja Chariots of Firesta hänet palkittiin Oscareilla.

Ah, nahkatrenssi
Tuota listaa katsellessa tuntuu, että liian usein ihmisten mielessä kiitos hahmojen vaatetuksesta menee ohjaajien visioille, vaikka todellisuudessa hyvät ohjaajat osaavat lähinnä hankkia oikeat puvustajat (pieni kärjistys tuossa sallittakoon). On uskomatonta, miten joku on elokuvien kautta synnyttänyt kymmeniä trendejä ja vuosikymmeniä laajentanut katsojien käsitystä estetiikasta, eikä suurin osa ole edes huomannut. Kaikkihan me kuitenkin olemme ottaneet Kummisedästä vinkkejä klassiseen ja eleganttiin tyyliin, ammentaneet Barry Lyndonista ja Marie Antoinettesta inspiraatioita vähintään asusteisiin tai kuolanneet niiden Darjeeling Limitedin aurinkolasien ja matkalaukkujen perään. Ja kenties joskus yrittäneet kopioida Brad Pittin tyyliä Ocean’s Twelvestä.

Ei, noita Team Zissou sneakereita EI saa mistään, believe me I've tried.

The care-free cool
No, kummastelut sikseen. Mieleisten puvustajien projekteja kannattaa seurata, sillä joskus muuten vaatimaton elokuva saattaa nousta laadukkaalla puvustuksella aivan toiselle tasolle. Esimerkiksi taannoin ihastuin elokuvaan Punainen Paroni (Der Rote Baron, 2008), jonka juoni meni jopa osittain ohi kun yritin mahduttaa muistiini kaikkia niitä mielettömiä pukeutumisideoita (puvustajana Gudrun Schretzmeier).
The Rat Pack ja 007 Licence to Kill, mutta minun kunnioitukseni kerää Miami Vicen ensimmäisen kauden puvustus.
Palaamme asiaan. Pysykää tyylikkäinä.
The Last Crusade of My Tacky Weekday Playlists
May 17, 2009
I promise you this is the last weekday titled playlist, they’re getting a bit embarrassing but I just couldn’t help myself with this one. For there can be no Saturday night jive without the Sunday blues. Or at least that’s what usually happens to me. But fear not! I have a solution! Behold…
The Useless List #4: From Sunday Blues to Sunday Grooves
1. Ted & Francis – Erlend (I know it’s uncool and unorthodox to put the same band twice on these lists like this, but how can I deny you this fabulous track?)
2. Metronomy – Heartbreaker (I love this song and oh my god that video is good. simple, touching funny, my cup of t)
3. Phoenix – 1901 (Again new material from the upcoming album. oh yes it sounds nice)
4. Friendly Fires – Paris (New-ish Friendly Fires. has a very nice build-up and vibe. simple but works)
5. Dizzee Rascal – Bonkers (Wow I even surprised myself, never been a dizzee fan but this one blew me away. I’m biased though, ‘bonkers’ is one of my favorite words ever… Bonkers!)
6. Britney Spears – Circus remixed by Diplo (I know it’s old and everything but this shit just got waay out of hand. just gotta dance those blues away. dance dance dance)
Maybe next time I’ll have something clever to say. Ciao!
The Secret Saturday Recipe
May 16, 2009
Good evening my dear readers. Tonight’s entry is something quite different from before; extremely simple and cosy, just like a perfect Saturday night should be. We will uncork an extremely tasty beverege and roll things up with a fresh playlist. Sound good? Well, sounds good enough to me anyway.
At this point I wish to emphasize the fact that all good things stay good only when enjoyed responsibly and reasonably.

Black gold
That being said, let’s talk about Bushmills Black Bush. I bought a bottle this week and I must say that even with the monstrous price of alcohol in Finland, it was a bargain. A stylish bottle filled with liquid gold for 30€. Extremely soft and aromatic, greets your mouth with velvety touch and says good-bye with a lingering oaky atmosphere. Enough kick to have a personal crispy ‘edge’ but the sherry (the almost fully single malt whiskey has aged in oloroso sherry-seasoned casks) softens the result and adds some delicate fruit. Thank you Ireland!
Here’s a playlist I wanted to post a week ago but ran out of time and then had wait and polish it to make it even better. Now, having aged like a fine whisky, it is ready. Here’s my ode to the weekend:
The Useless List #3: Saturday Night Jive!
1. Eloise Whitaker – Don’t turn your back on me (fun old school disco, i was inspired by the sim city 2000 italo disco set in club Nolla last week)
2. Indochine – L’aventurier (can there be anything cooler than the disco scene in France in the 80s?)
3. Jenny Wilson – Let my shoes lead me forward remixed by The Knife (very old and everyone’s heard it, but I just couldn’t help digging it up from way back playlists after the fantastic gig Jenny pulled off at Tavastia on Thursday)
4. Ted & Francis – I wish I was a polar bear (been my ‘get the day started’ -song for weeks. pure excellence. spot on)
and top things off with two ‘maybe not so fresh, but does it matter with stonkers like this?’ -tracks:
5. Les Corps Mince de Francoise – Cool and bored (very much looking forward to their gig at flow festival, although haven’t been too excited of how they’ve been a ‘hipster phenomenon’ in helsinki. not their fault though, so just enjoy the music! Let’s dance!)
6. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads will roll (my #1 album of the past month. stonking!)
Have a great weekend, remember to drink responsibly
Mid-week Memory Lane
May 12, 2009
Tänään on jälleen vuoro pienen musiikkikatsauksen. Sitten saatte sarjassaan toisen erittäin laadukkaista playlistoistani (ks. termi ’sarkasmi’).
Päivän kokoonpano on siis japanilainen Soil & “Pimp” Sessions.

Should this be filed under 'fashion' category?
Kuullessani ensimmäistä kertaa (monien mielestä hieman liian sekavan) Satsuriku New Wave -kappaleen, en tainnut pidättää ihastuksen huudahdustani.
The Useless List #2: Tuesday in Transition
1. Vampire Weekend – A-Punk (loistavaa kesäpäivämeininkiä mielikuvituksellisella ja hauskalla idealla. etenkin rumpujen käyttö miellyttää)
2. Eagles of Death Metal – Wannabe in LA (alkaahan se olla jo vähän soitettu, mutta tässä listassa on nyt kyse ainoastaan fiilareista. ja voi mikä särö soundissa.)
3. The Dead Wheather – Hang You From Heavens (no tämä nyt ainakin on tuoretta. uusi Jack White -projekti. line-upissa jäseniä the killsistä, quotsasta, raconteursista jne. eli kiinnostaa!)

Throup edustaa nimenomaan muodin taiteellista puolta korostavaa suunnittelusuuntausta, mistä hyvänä esimerkkinä on mm. hänen päätöksensä pukea näytöksessä olleet vaatteensa itse tekemiensä ihmisen kokoisten veistosten päälle ihmismallien sijaan.

The Lion Within... or behind

Where's your head at?
Angles without edges
April 30, 2009
I humbly greet You again, my good readers. I’m supposed to do something much much more important than blogging, that something else even has a deadline… but we all know how that’s exactly the time when inspiration, that infuriatingly psychological state completely immune to spiritual bribes, strikes. After having spent way too long thinking of something to write about, I finally gave up and decided not to force it. That’s when I stumbled on our subject of today. Here’s his name: Philippe Decouflé.
At this point, I want you to note this: If you are in a hurry or otherwise wouldn’t really have the five minutes this video will take, plus 5-10 minutes to spend on daydreaming and tear-wiping, then really do yourself a favor and return to this post later. Trust me, some things need time and peace.
That being said, back to Philippe Decouflé. Where to begin. We are talking about a French dancer/choreographer, or as he has been also characterized, ‘camera danseur’. His different projects and abilities are too numerous for me to cover, as my knowledge of him is extremely limited, but tonight I will offer one angle, from which we will be admiring him. This is his role as director/choreographer.
How I happened to find him, was by the info that he was the director of the legendary classic music video of New Order’s True Faith, which if you still haven’t seen, you must check out, but not yet. Be patient. His style is so unique, I’ve been meaning to shine my spotlight of analysis on him for some time now. And boy am I glad that I finally did. Never have I experienced such a perfect combination of emotion, humour, absolute beauty, freshness and tenderness in a dance performance (not that my experiences on dance or ballet would be of great diversity or large amounts anyway). The music and the simple setting of his performance, Infidèle, dried my throat, watered my eyes and left me speechless but bursting with expression, extremely happy but also touched and completely devastated. And we are talking only of the palest shadow, the video of it on YouTube.
All my efforts of trying to summarize it in words, feel pointless and futile, so I will now offer you the Key to the Gates of Heaven. I give you Infidèle, Angle 2, by Philippe Decouflé
There is also angles 1 and 3, but I recommend starting with angle 2. Amongst the videos of the same uploader (thank you ib50ib50, we are in your debt) there is a whole movie by Decouflé called 2 iris. I merely took some sneakpeeks, but it seemed also something one cannot forgive oneself for not watching.
But that is a story for some other night. I wish you all an inspiring night/day, and I will myself now go and watch that show one more time and maybe go to sleep teary-eyed and do tomorrow what I was supposed to do today.
